c vs. k vs. ck

Last week, we talked about how the /k/ sound can be made by c, k, or ck.  We had learned previously that ck happens at the end of words or syllables.

  • We learned that ck is only used at the end after a short vowel (like in duck, back, sick).
  • We learned that k is not used after a short vowel.
  • We learned that c does not usually end words.

Oh the Places We Have Been!

We're collecting data on places where everyone in our district has lived.  Take a moment and fill out this survey listing places your child has lived!  A paper copy went home today of the survey if you don't want to fill out the online survey.  Please note, no names will be attached to the survey.  We just want to map all the places we have lived before.

Super Reader Program!

During March, we celebrate Dr. Seuss' Birthday and Read Across America Day!  We're kicking off our Super Reader Program!  For the month of March, your child will bring home a Super Reader Log.  Please record each book you read to your child (or your child reads to you).  You may have them color in the Super Reader next to each log entry.  Keep the log in your child's backpack so that they may record books they read in school as well.  We will check the log every Friday.  For every 10 books, your child were earn a ribbon.  If they read 50 books, they will get to be a Super Reader for a day and wear a Super Reader cape!  If they read 100 books, they will get to wear the cape again AND be on PV News to highlight their favorite book!  We will wrap up the Super Reader Program on Friday April 1st!

Strategies for Your Son/Daughter to Use When Reading

There are many strategies we use as fluent readers, but students learning to read need help learning these strategies.  Students sometimes use one, two, or more of these strategies to help them decode an unknown word.  Keep in mind that each student develops at their own rate.  For example, a student who may not have all of their letter sounds down may have trouble tapping out a word, while a student who knows all their sounds might be able to 'look for chunks' in words or 'flip the vowel'.  It all depends on the student and the word they are trying to decode.  Here's a list of strategies we focus on to help us decode new words in Kindergarten...

You may find this as a small bookmark in your child's guided reading folder...

Reminder: Hibernation Day Friday 1/29!

On Friday 1/29, we will have Hibernation Day!  Students may wear pajamas and bring a stuffed friend to school!

Reminder: Peanut / Tree Nut Free Classroom

Just a reminder that our classroom is a peanut / tree nut free classroom.  Any food for snack in the classroom must be peanut / tree nut free.  Please check the ingredients on your child's snack.  With little hands going everywhere we need help keeping our room safe!  PPJ or anything meant for lunch should be kept sealed in a separate container or bag so that your child does not touch it during Snack Time.  Students wash their hands and we wash tables any time we eat as a precaution.
PPJ sandwiches are ok for lunch only as students with home lunch sit at one table and students with school lunch and food allergies sit at our other table.  We have students with PPJ wash their hands after they eat their lunch.

Thank you again for helping us keep our classroom safe!

Looking for Old iPhones

In our classroom, I have been having students use my old iPhone as a Center for Literacy Activities.  I would like to expand this Center, but would need more iPhones to do it.  If you have an old iPhone (preferably iPhone 4 or newer), I would welcome the donation!  I can put old iPads, old mobile phones, or tablets to use too :).

Fundations Help for Parents

We have been learning how to tap out CVC words to help us read!  When your child has a CVC word, they tap it out and swoop across to put the sounds together to make the word.  I've found some YouTube movies that model how to tap.  One of the movies models how to tap.  It will include vowel patterns that we don't do in Kindergarten.  There's also information about letter writing and letter ID also.
